Geographical location: The region of Trnava borders with three countries - the Czech Republic (a common border of ca 45 km), Austria (ca 12 km) and Hungary (a common border of ca 48 km) which creates preconditions of development of cross-border co-operation. The favourable demographic potential, strategic geographic location, long-term spa traditions and favourable climatic conditions are preconditions of further economic development.

The self-governing region of Trnava is part of the „golden triangle" - of the developing region of Vienna - Bratislava - Györ. The distance Trnava - Vienna is ca 118 km and Trnava - Györ is ca 108 km. In the vicinity, ca 50 km, there is M. R. Štefánik Airport at Ivánka pri Dunaji and Schwechat - Wien Airport (ca 110 km).

The most important industrial branches are energy, food, chemical, pharmaceutical, machine, metal, paper, textile, clothing, furniture, building material, and wood productions.

 

Building industry: 457 entrepreneurial subjects, the average registration number of employees - 3,254.

 

Agriculture and fishery: 301 entrepreneurial subjects, the average registration number of employees - 11,848.

In plant production, densely sown cereals, maize, sugar beet, vegetables, fruits, and vine are grown. Animal production deals with cattle and swine raising; poultry raising is being extended. Owing to climatic conditions, the region belongs to the agriculturally most important ones within Slovakia.

Piešťany: a spa at Piešťany; a swimming pool Eva; a recreation facility and a water reservoir at Sĺňava

Senica: recreation facilities at Šaštín-Gazárka and Tomky; Kunovo Dam, a spa at Smrdáky

Skalica: a recreation facility at Zlatnícka dolina

Trnava: recreation facilities at Hrudky-Buková, Smolenice-Jahodník, and Dobrá Voda

 

Education: 352 maternity schools, 262 elementary schools, 30 secondary professional schools, 20 grammar schools, 37 secondary apprentice centres. Universities: The University of Trnava and The St. Cyril and Methodius University - 8 faculties.

 

Culture: 1 theatre, 1 active permanent stage, 6 museums, 2 galleries, 31 cinemas, 248 public libraries, 1 observatory and planetarium at Hlohovec.

 

Health care: 6 hospitals and maternity homes, 989 facilities of ambulatory health care, 2 special treatment institutes, 3 natural treatment spas.
